Wine - The History

The history of wine is a fascinating subject, and there are many different theories about the origin of wine.

A popular belief is that people have been drinking it for at least 10,000 years.

The first people began making wine in ancient Mesopotamia, present-day Iraq.

A Sumerian tablet from around 2050 BC describes how to make "wine" by fermenting fruit juice with honey and water.

Winemaking is also mentioned in the Bible as one of Noah's tasks after the Great Flood (in 2:11) and in the Book of Kings (in 20:15). Wine is also mentioned in ancient Greek writings.

    Viticulture

Viticulture is the cultivation of grapes for the production of wine.

Viticulture encompasses all steps from planting the vines to harvesting and pressing the grapes into juice with the skins still attached, fermenting the juice, aging the wine after fermentation, bottling the finished product and sealing it with a cork within minutes of separating it from the lees ("lees" are dead yeast cells), and storing the bottles.
